Fire Safety Burn Bans vs. Air Quality

Fire safety burn bans are issued by the fire marshal when dry weather conditions heighten the risk of wildfires. Fire safety burn bans are generally called during the summer and can last for several months.

Air quality burn bans are issued and enforced by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency when air pollution may reach or reaches unhealthy levels. Air quality burn bans typically occur during colder fall and winter months to address smoke from residential wood burning in wood stoves and fireplaces.  Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is NOT responsible for issuing or enforcing fire safety burn bans.

Please check the King County Fire Marshal’s information page regarding the current status of fire safety burn bans in the area.  You may also contact Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) to determine if an air quality burn ban is in effect or call 800.595.4341Click here for more information on how to file a complaint.
